A somber cloud hangs over Providence, Rhode Island, after 18-year-old Darmani Balbuena was fatally shot on what was supposed to be a celebratory day marking his transition into adulthood. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon on Rhodes Street, where Balbuena was found with a gunshot wound outside his home. As reported by NECN, he was rushed to the hospital but later pronounced dead, making this tragedy the city’s sixth homicide of the year.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez, expressing his condolences, described the event as "a senseless act of violence." According to a statement obtained by NBC 10 News, Perez said that his "heart goes out to the victim and his family." The precise circumstances leading up to the shooting are still under investigation, and as of now, no arrests have been made. Perez noted that the shooter had left the area following the incident.
The preliminary investigation has revealed that the shooting took place during a gathering, a statement echoed by Col. Oscar Perez, who noted that Balbuena's family heard a gunshot before finding him in their home's foyer. "It's a tragic loss of an 18-year-old, whose birthday happened to be today" Perez told WPRI. "It’s extremely sad and no family should ever have to go through that type of loss and experience trauma."
The Providence Police Department has yet to release additional information about potential suspects or motives as they continue to piece together the events leading to Balbuena’s untimely death. The community, now grappling with the impact of this devastating loss, awaits answers while police urge anyone with information to come forward.
