The waters of Lake Michigan near Frankfort turned tragic yesterday when a boating incident claimed the life of an 86-year-old man from Midland. The Benzie County Sheriff’s Office reported that the boat, a 23-foot vessel, began taking on water about a mile west of the Frankfort lighthouse at around 6 a.m. The Free Press informed that two individuals were aboard the boat when it capsized.
A rescue effort ensued wherein a nearby fisherman managed to save the 59-year-old boater, however, the other occupant could not be located initially. According to Audacy, agencies across multiple counties, inclusive of the United States Coast Guard, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and local fire and police units, coordinated the search which culminated around 5 p.m. with the discovery of the 86-year-old's body.
The identity of the deceased man was initially withheld pending family notification but has since been confirmed by authorities. UpNorthLive noted the rescued 59-year-old, also from Midland, had been aboard the vessel during the onset of the mishap and was saved by the timely intervention of the good Samaritan.
Further details about the circumstances of the capsize and the state of the vessel at the time of distress are yet to be released by the investigating authorities as they continue to examine the tragic occurrence.
