Motorists planning to travel through north central Pennsylvania should anticipate detours and delays as several roads in the area are currently closed or under lane restriction due to flood damage, downed trees, and utility issues. Critical closures have hit Lycoming and Tioga counties where severe weather has taken a toll on the local infrastructure, according to an update from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
In Lycoming County, Route 14 from the ramp to Route 15 up to Trout Run Mountain Road is facing a long-term closure with extensive flood damage wreaking havoc on the road's integrity, making it unsafe for travel—a detour is actively routing vehicles via Trout Run Mountain Road, Lycoming Creek Road, and Beautys Run Road, keeping the flow of traffic albeit disrupted, Little Pine Creek Road also remains closed between Route 287 in English Center and Route 44 in Waterville due to similar issues.
Over in Tioga County, PennDOT reports that Phoenix Road is open but with restrictions, while Canada Road and North Road have been shut down for the long haul, and detours around these areas are in place through Old State Road and Williamson Road, and via Route 249, Austinburg Road, and Route 49 respectively; the goal of these detours is to minimize the inconvenience to drivers as the necessary repairs are completed, Wattles Run Road remains inaccessible at the bridge in Clymer Township area, with a proposed detour that involves using Route 49 and Route 349.
These closures represent a significant challenge for both local residents and travelers passing through these counties, with detours adding additional miles and time to commutes, PennDOT is working to restore these crucial routes as quickly as possible, understanding the vital role they play in the connectivity and economy of north central Pennsylvania, however, the extent of the flood damage suggests that these disruptions may be the new normal for the foreseeable future. For updated information on road conditions and closures, travelers can refer to the official PennDOT advisory issued yesterday.
