Two teenagers were taken into custody after a tense encounter with Goodyear police on Tuesday that culminated in an officer-involved shooting. The incident began when officers located a stolen vehicle at approximately 10:00 A.M. and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, according to a report by FOX 10 Phoenix. The driver, a 15-year-old male, drove into a residential area near Sarival Avenue and Van Buren Street, ultimately stopping in a dead-end street.
The subsequent events unfolded rapidly, with officers quickly surrounding the stopped vehicle. A 13-year-old passenger exited the car and was taken into custody without incident. However, the situation escalated when the young driver decided to suddenly drive toward where the officers were positioned. "A Goodyear officer feared for his safety and fired at the vehicle," FOX 10 Phoenix stated in their coverage of the event.
In pursuit of the teenager who fled from the car after the shooting, officers were aided by a Goodyear K9 unit, which eventually helped to apprehend the suspect. Both teens are now in custody, and it has been confirmed by authorities that no injuries occurred during the incident. Glendale Police has been tasked with the ongoing investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
As the investigation continues, Goodyear police have released further details about the confrontation. According to information provided to azfamily.com, the driver had maneuvered the car toward several officers, which prompted the discharged weapon from one officer who felt threatened. This moment served to drastically raise the stakes in an already tense situation, ending with the two teenagers in custody and an inquiry into the officers' actions.
