At a recent Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners' meeting, the University of Tampa's baseball team and their indefatigable coach were the toast of the town as they received commendations for their triumph in the 2024 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship. According to a recap posted on Hillsborough County's official website, the Spartans have clinched their ninth national title, leveling with Florida Southern for most in Division II history.
The Spartans ended their season with a formidable 52 wins and only eight losses, etching the fourth-most victorious season into their storied history books. This title is their sixth in the 2000s alone, which anyone with a passing interest in college baseball will tell you is an era firmly painted with Spartan colors.
At the helm of this athletic ship is Head Coach Joe Urso. Coming into the role in 2001, this local born-and-raised sports maven has garnered a reputation that spans far beyond the Tampa, or even Florida, borders. Urso recently crowned the unanimous 2024 National Coach of the Year for NCAA Division II Baseball, has led his team to more national championships than any of his contemporaries during his tenure. His coaching chops have produced scores of First Team All-Americans, National Gold Glove winners, and Academic All-Americans — a legacy in the making.
"[I was] born and raised here in Hillsborough County, so to bring a national championship right back to our county means a lot to me ... and all of our players," Urso humbly told the Board after accepting the commendations. With their latest championship, the University of Tampa Spartans are not just winning games. They're setting a standard in college sports focused on athletic excellence and building a lasting legacy.
