Yesterday, a semi-driver lost control and collided with an empty vehicle in Oshtemo Township, leading to a prolonged closure of US-131. According to FOX 17, the incident occurred near mile marker 40 at about 6:30 a.m., when the 22-year-old driver from Comstock Park attempted to pass another car. Michigan State Police (MSP) reported that the truck subsequently crashed into the parked vehicle and crossed over the guardrail before ending up in a ditch.
Traffic was disrupted for approximately five hours, officials stated, as recovery crews worked to clear the scene. The driver, who was unharmed and wearing a seatbelt, received a citation for improper lane use, MSP informed, no drugs or alcohol are suspected to have played a role in the crash.
Similar information was reported by WOODTV, who described how the traffic was snarled following the crash. MSP clarified that, despite the alarming scene of the truck lying in the nearby ditch, there were no physical injuries sustained by the driver. The freeway shutdown created significant delays, finally reopening nearly five hours post-crash.
Additional details from MLive confirmed that the expressway was partially shut down for a majority of the morning and completely closed for a shorter duration between roughly 10 and 11 a.m. The authorities have since cleared the dumped truck from the scene, and normal traffic flow on US-131 has resumed.
