Uvalde is drawing closer to solidifying a sense of renewal in the wake of tragedy with a new elementary school set to replace the site of the devastating Robb Elementary shooting. According to FOX San Antonio, The Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation announced a significant boost in funding for the project, thanks to a $10 million donation from the Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation.
Plans for the new campus at 820 E Leona Rd., are intricately designed to include the latest in safety technology, the developments arriving more than two years after the shooting that claimed the lives of 19 students and two teachers. The foundation has also instigated a "Hope Blooms in Uvalde" campaign promising to match up to $5 million in contributions, as reported by KENS 5.
"Our main goal also is to do everything we can to help honor both the victims and the survivors of the tragedy at Robb Elementary," Dolph Briscoe IV, president of the Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation, told KENS 5. This objective is underscored by the inclusion of a memorial tree, envisaged to honor those lost with branches representing the teachers and children whose lives were taken in the tragedy.
An unexpected increase in construction costs led to a temporary halt of work in December 2023, however, a revised bid by Satterfield & Pontikes has set the project back on track with completion expected in Fall 2025, the plans having been disrupted but now revitalized by collective efforts and shared vision for a secure educational future in Uvalde, Tim Miller, Executive Director for the Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation explained to FOX San Antonio. The school's name is still under consideration with the aim to present a proposal to the school board this October.
