The International Hunter Education Association (IHEA-USA) has named Steve Dazey, a hunter education coordinator for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's (WDFW) Eastern Region, Hunter Education Coordinator of the Year. This accolade was announced during the IHEA-USA annual conference in June 2024, highlighting Dazey's dedication to hunter education and firearm safety over a ten-year tenure with WDFW. WDFW celebrated Dazey's decade of service in a recent article, chronicling his extensive work and the miles he puts on his truck traveling from Spokane to various parts of eastern Washington.
Responsible for coordinating essential tasks, from handling classes and aiding instructors to inventorying equipment, Dazey's role expands beyond the confines of an ordinary coordinator. WDFW's article notes that putting over a thousand miles on his truck most months, his mobile office serves many functions, including a closet and a delivery vehicle that ensures resources are available where hunter education is needed. Steve Dazey's truck not only makes his contributions possible but also symbolizes the extensive reach of his dedication.
A key figure in the region, Dazey has also been instrumental in implementing staff firearm safety training programs and acting as a Range Safety Officer trainer for volunteer hunter ed instructors, one of his favorite job aspects, according to a statement obtained by WDFW's article. Additionally, Dazey's volunteer spirit extends into coaching scout leaders in firearm safety and managing Boy Scouts camps, highlighting his commitment to community and youth education.
His contributions do not end with his WDFW role. He participates in various local community services, significantly impacting lives beyond hunter education. Dazey told WDFW, "I am especially appreciative of my opportunity to serve on the Board of Governors at the Spokane hospital since I get to meet and see many of the children who we can make such a difference in their lives". In terms of recognition, Dave Whipple, WDFW’s hunter education section manager, spoke to Dazey's professional merit, saying, "Steve truly deserves this award. His work and leadership in hunter education and other firearm safety arenas over the past year have been outstanding."
Reflective of a humble servant leader, Dazey expressed honor in being nominated, finding the act of recognition meaningful in itself. He has accepted the accolade graciously, telling WDFW, "Honestly, I am most honored by the fact that someone took the time to nominate me and felt that I was deserving. That recognition means a lot to me."
