I-40 West is shutting down, once again, this weekend. Road warriors who traverse this 4-mile sector will need to seek alternative routes from 8 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday, as reported by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The closure, making a repeat appearance for a second weekend on the trot, is part of the rehabilitation operations taking place on the westbound bridge spanning the French Broad River.
The detours are clear, yet they seem to mimic the congestion they aim to avoid, almost as if the path of least resistance carries its form of resistance. Motorists are directed to use I-240 West at Exit 53B, according to officials, a stretch that will now endure the added weight of displaced traffic, furthermore, the Brevard Road onramp to I-40 West will also be out of commission with its traffic rerouted to join the I-240 West detour.
This construction is focused on removing the old surface layer from the bridge to get it ready for resurfacing. As part of a $27.9 million project, the work will also fix issues with the bridge’s support structures to improve safety and smoothness for drivers crossing Hominy Creek and the French Broad River, as reported by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
The project is set to finish by spring 2026 and will include resurfacing and bridge updates. Drivers will face weekend closures and detours, but these disruptions are part of the process towards a better roadway.
