A woman and man died early Saturday when the minivan they were riding in ran off Hucks Road, struck a tree and flipped over, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Officers responding to a call in the 4800 block of Hucks Road just after 6 a.m. found a heavily damaged, overturned white 2013 Dodge Caravan that had been traveling north before it left the roadway. Medic pronounced both occupants dead at the scene at 6:45 a.m.
CMPD identified the victims as 55-year-old Andrea Pohl Parkin, who was driving, and 36-year-old passenger Bryson Duran Brown, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department press release. Investigators from the department's Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search units responded to the scene, and the case has been logged under report number 20260829-0610-03. As WSOC-TV reported, the investigation remains preliminary.
Speed and Impairment Cited as Suspected Factors
CMPD investigators specifically noted that both speed and driver impairment are suspected contributing factors for Parkin in the single-vehicle rollover. The department has not detailed what evidence supports that suspicion, and the crash investigation remains ongoing as a developing story. Because both people in the vehicle died at the scene, North Carolina's Felony Death by Vehicle statute, which covers impaired drivers who unintentionally kill someone else and carries a Class D felony punishment of up to 204 months in prison, would not apply here, since that law addresses a driver causing another person's death rather than their own.
The dispatch of CMPD's specialized units to Hucks Road reflects how the department allocates resources to serious wrecks. The agency's Civilian Crash Investigation Unit handled 38% of all non-injury traffic calls in Charlotte in 2025 to free up sworn officers, but fatal collisions and impaired-driving crashes are handled strictly by sworn detectives and the Major Crash Investigation Unit, the outlet noted.
Part of a Citywide Pattern of Rising Fatal Crashes
The Hucks Road deaths add to a troubling trend across Charlotte. Traffic fatalities in the city rose 9% to 81 deaths in 2025 even as overall collisions declined, according to the city's FY2025 Vision Zero annual report. Total crashes citywide dropped 30.8% from a peak of 37,877 in 2022 to 26,225 in 2025, though 17,843 crashes were already recorded through just the first half of 2026, per data analyzed by The Charlotte Ledger.
Speeding remains one of the leading drivers of that death toll. NC Vision Zero statistics show that speeding or driving too fast for conditions is involved in 40% of all fatal traffic crashes in Charlotte, and speed combined with improper vehicle operation accounts for over 60% of severe-injury collisions citywide. City analysis has also found that 80% of Charlotte's fatal and severe-injury crashes occur on just 13% of its street network, a designation known as the city's High Injury Network.
Second Major Incident on the Corridor This Year
This is not the first time the Hucks Road corridor in CMPD's North Division has drawn a major emergency response in 2026. A March 22 pool party shooting in the 5900 block of Hucks Road left one person dead and four injured, according to a report from WCNC. The rollover comes just over a week after Hoodline reported on another fatal DWI crash near WT Harris Boulevard that also involved CMPD's Major Crash unit and DWI Task Force, part of a string of deadly Charlotte wrecks this summer that also included a fatal I-485 rollover near North Tryon in early August and a fatal Independence Boulevard crash in early July.
No further details on the cause of the crash or any charges have been released, and CMPD's investigation into the Hucks Road wreck continues.
