West Duluth is gearing up for the annual Spirit Valley Days, a multi-day celebration known for its vibrant parade, car show, and craft and vendor fair, with street closures and parking restrictions planned for the safety and accommodation of participants and spectators. According to a city announcement, the festivities kicked off with the Spirit Valley Days Parade which began at 6 p.m. on Thursday and brought street closures to parts of 59th Ave W, Grand Ave, and Central Ave from 5:30 p.m., reopening them by approximately 7:30 p.m. after the event concluded.
The parade, which winds its way through the heart of West Duluth, prompted temporary traffic reroutes and public transportation detours; specifically, eastbound traffic on Grand Ave was directed north on 59th Ave W toward Cody St and Eighth St while westbound lanes took a northward turn on Central Ave directing vehicles toward Cody St and Eighth St - traffic adjustments necessitated by the festive procession. Similarly, Duluth Transit Authority buses adopted alternate paths utilizing Cody St, with westbound buses funneling up Central Ave and traveling west on Cody to 59th Ave W, and those heading east turning up 59th Ave W before reaching Cody St and making their way to Central Ave.
Friday's continuation of Spirit Valley Days delivered the excitement of a car show, with Grand Ave between 57th Ave W and Central Ave transformed into a showcase space from 3 p.m., prompting a road closure that lasted until the show's 7 p.m. end and with normal traffic resuming by roughly 8 p.m. Next on the schedule is the Craft and Vendor Show which will see Grand Ave closed once again on Saturday morning starting at 7 a.m., the street is expected to be bustling with local artisans and merchants until the closing time of 3 p.m., followed, by a return to regular traffic flows by about 5:30 p.m.
The impact on parking is no small matter as no parking is permitted on either side of Grand Ave along the parade route, on 59th Ave W from Raleigh St to Grand Ave, Central Ave from Grand Ave to Ramsey St, and on Ramsey St from Central Ave to Mike Colalillo Drive where "No Parking" signs have been posted and vehicles in violation stand to be tagged and towed - clear indications of the city's commitment to ensuring a smooth operation for the events while balancing the needs for public safety and order. With all these adjustments in the pipeline, residents and visitors are advised to be alert to the detours and no-parking areas, with the promise of officers on hand to guide traffic through the temporary maze of festive disruptions.
