Residents of West Maui can breathe a little easier now that the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management's (DEM) Wastewater Reclamation Division has given the green light on sewer service for an area once singed by disaster. The green status, a beacon of normalcy, indicates that active sewer service has been restored to seven lots near Kahula Place and the southern tip of Lahainaluna Road, a welcome change from the red status that hung over these properties like an unwanted cloud.
Details came down the pipeline at the Weekly Disaster Recovery Community Update Meeting at Lahaina Civic Center last Wednesday, as reported by the County of Maui. Wildfires in August 2023 wreaked havoc on the area's infrastructure, effectively severing wastewater service and leaving many to grapple with uncertainty. To quickly check if your domain is back in the circle of service, the county's advising to simply visit their website and to promptly type your address into their Sewer Service Status interactive map.
While this update is a step toward rehabilitation, DEM Director Shayne Agawa stressed there's more work ahead. Agawa shared on the County of Maui website that the division "anticipates continuing to amend areas in Lahaina impacted by the August 2023 wildfires in coming weeks and months." It is a steady, pragmatic approach to a complex situation, touching communities still reeling from nature's fickle hand.
Those with further inquires—or perhaps gripping to a set of questions—are encouraged to reach out directly to the Wastewater Reclamation Division by dialing (808) 270-7417. Whether it's a drip of doubt or a flood of concerns, the division's line is open to provide the necessary clarity on the sewer status for those affected.
