Fans of the iconic Texas-based burger chain Whataburger have a sweet reason to celebrate today. In honor of its 74th anniversary, the restaurant is offering a free 20-ounce birthday cake-flavored milkshake. This delectable giveaway is available to patrons who download the Whataburger app and sign up for a rewards account, as reported by KSAT.
Scott Hudler, Whataburger SVP and Chief Marketing Officer described the milkshake as a "party in a cup" and asserted it will "taste like fun," according to a statement obtained by KSAT. For those unable to snag the free shake on Thursday, Whataburger plans to feature the birthday cake milkshake on its menu for a period following the event.
National Whataburger Day, which is celebrated today right alongside the burger chain's birthday, represents more than just free shakes – it pays homage to a company deeply rooted in Texas history. The first Whataburger opened on Aug. 8, 1950, in Corpus Christi, and the restaurant's name was inspired by the customer reaction to the taste of their burgers, as detailed by a story from El Paso Times.
According to El Paso Times, it will be up for grabs from the strike of midnight to the final minute today. Moreover, a glimpse into the chain's journey reveals its expansion from a burger stand to over 1,000 restaurants nationwide, employing more than 51,000 workers and serving an impressive number of 60 million customers a year. While revelers enjoy their complimentary milkshakes, they can also take in some of the brand's heritage, like the iconic A-frame design first erected in Odessa, Texas, in 1960 – a design choice reflective of an era charmed by drive-ins and gleaming automobiles, and remains a nostalgic sight in parts of Texas today.
