Authorities in Worcester have detained a male after discovering an unserialized firearm, also known as a "ghost gun," during a traffic stop. As reported by Worcester Police Department's press release, the arrest occurred on the evening of August 1st when officers from the Summer Impact unit were assisting with a separate vehicle stop. It was during this incident that a passing vehicle, aiming to seemingly challenge the law with a heavily tinted license plate, yelled an expletive at an officer, thus drawing the attention of law enforcement.
The subsequent stop of this vehicle, on Quinsigamond Avenue, led to a search after the occupants were asked to explicitly confirm whether there was a gun in the car. According to the Worcester Police, twenty-one-year-old Shane Rivera-Borrero, sitting in the backseat and exhibiting signs of distress through heavy breathing, gave officers cause to search his backpack. Inside, they found what police would to later identify as a "ghost gun," a term used to describe firearms without a serial number, making them difficult to trace.
Rivera-Borrero was arrested following the discovery and, as he informed the officers, he did not hold a license to carry a firearm. Worcester Police validated this lack of licensing and charged Rivera-Borrero with multiple offenses, including carrying a loaded and unlicensed firearm, improper storage of a firearm, and possession of ammunition without an FID card.
The situation raises concerns over the proliferation of these untraceable weapons and poses questions about the enforcement of firearm regulations. The other individuals in the car were not detained, and the driver received only a verbal warning for the tinted plate cover, despite also having a legal, registered firearm in the console. This incident, aligning with the broader conversation about gun control, spotlights the challenge law enforcement faces with the surge of unregulated firearms on the streets.
