With the end of summer on the horizon, residents and travelers are gearing up for a bustling Labor Day weekend. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is sounding the call for early travel preparations, as the expected surge on major routes is set to coincide with general holiday revelry. According to WSDOT's recent announcement, travelers should anticipate traffic congestion and be mindful of potential road closures due to wildfire activities.
To avoid the worst of the travel rush, WSDOT has released holiday travel charts that include peak times for transportation corridors like US 2, Interstate 90, I-5, and routes to the Canada-U.S. border. While most state construction projects will observe a pause during this period to reduce traffic snarls, last-minute roadworks and unforeseen crashes could still extend travel times, the agency cautioned. In hopes of providing a smoother experience for those traveling across the state, they encourage utilizing their online tools—such as the WSDOT mobile app and real-time travel maps—or staying updated through their social media channels.
Key guidance from WSDOT's announcement includes opting for early or late departures, checking ferry schedules in advance for sea-bound journeys, and being prepared with alternative destinations as popular recreation sites are expected to hit maximum capacity swiftly. Traveling by ferry? Be ready for extended wait times during peak periods from August 29 to 31 going westbound and August 31 to September 2 heading eastbound. WSDOT also reminds travelers to heed work zone signs and speed limits and to respect road closure signs for safety.
