The political landscape in Wynne, Arkansas, is heating up as a petition to remove Mayor Jennifer Hobbs from office has successfully gathered enough signatures to bring the issue to a vote on the November 5 ballot. The campaign, led by "Always A Jacket," accuses Hobbs of mishandling the recovery efforts following a devastating tornado in March 2023, an event that deeply scarred the community. The group, according to a statement by their spokesperson Princella Smith, as per WREG, worked tirelessly to have this referendum appear on the ballot, granting the residents of Wynne a chance "to blaze a new way forward."
Cross County Clerk Mary Beth Sanders confirmed the petition met the required 1,092 signatures in a verification process that only ended. On August 5, "Always A Jacket" submitted the petition, quickly surpassing the necessary threshold with 1,207 signatures. As outlined in the Arkansas Constitution, this certification allows for the potential removal of a city officer if a majority of voters support the measure, as reported by THV11. In response, Mayor Hobbs defended her actions and reaffirmed her commitment to Wynne, emphasizing her over 30 years of residency and dedication to the community.
Further criticisms by "Always A Jacket" highlight deficiencies in Mayor Hobbs' response to housing shortages exacerbated by the tornado aftermath, with several residents still living in FEMA trailers and lacking affordable housing options. Smith, expressing the community's concerns, said, per KAIT8, that no moves had been made "to bring any affordable housing into this town." This issue is compounded by delays in rebuilding E.U. Deshay Park, with the group alleging financial mismanagement by Hobbs, an accusation she fervently denies, clarifying the role of the city council in spending decisions.
