On Labor Day, a significant demonstration unfolded in downtown Baltimore, where around 200 workers from the Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor Hotel initiated a one-day strike. Represented by the UNITE HERE Local 7 union, this diverse group consists of baristas, servers, cooks, housekeepers, and more, all unified in their demand for better wages and working conditions. In a report by Fox Baltimore, Tracy Lingo, President of UNITE HERE Local 7, emphasized the workers' struggle, stating, "Baltimore hotel workers are fighting for our economic lives."
These Hilton employees are pushing back against what they describe as unsustainable workloads and inadequate compensation that fails to meet the cost of living. According to interviews collected by WMAR, the workers are requesting an increase in pay to $20 per hour. Their protest is not happening in isolation but is part of a nationwide wave of 10,000 hotel workers asserting their right to fairer labor terms.
The strike follows months of contract negotiations, which reached an impasse when the previous agreement lapsed last Thursday. Owned by the City of Baltimore, the Hilton finds itself at the center of a local conversation on how municipal authorities and businesses value their workforce. Hilton's management, in anticipation of the strike, cited by WMAR earlier this month, their commitment to amicable negotiations, aiming for a "fair and reasonable agreement" for all parties involved.
The underlying issues stem from responses to the COVID-19 pandemic when many hotels, according to UNITE HERE Local 7, downsized staffing and suspended guest services—adjustments that have not been reversed even as normalcy returns. Workers felt the sting of these cuts, losing job opportunities and suffering a loss in income.
