Charges have been leveled against two school officials for their alleged failure to report a rape involving a juvenile. According to WBAL-TV, Aberdeen Middle School's principal, Regina Jones, and a paraeducator identified as Tanya Johnson were charged with failing to adhere to state-mandated reporting protocols.
The Aberdeen Police Department was reportedly alerted to the rape by a hospital on April 18, 2023. The investigation found that the incident had occurred six days prior, and the student victim had approached school staff about this serious matter the following day. Yet, both Jones and Johnson, who are required by Maryland law to report such allegations, apparently did not fulfill their obligation to report the case to police or child protective services.
Months after the event, on July 16, 2023, the Harford County State's Attorney's Office moved forward with an indictment against both school staff members. Each accused was arrested and subsequently released, with court dates pending in the future. This legal requirement placed upon educators is clear: they must act immediately upon learning of potential child abuse or neglect without the necessity to first confirm the allegations.
Digging further into the case reveals that another individual—a 17-year-old—has also been charged in connection with the rape of the student, as per information provided by FOX Baltimore. The names of the principal and paraeducator have been circulating since their respective arrests on July 26 and August 1, with law enforcement asserting the seriousness of these charges and the accountability expected of those entrusted with the welfare of young students.
