Tennessee's Department of Revenue has made a significant shift in its leadership structure, promoting Amanda McGraw to the twin roles of deputy commissioner and chief financial officer, an update that was published on the department's official website communicates. With her experience dating back to 2011 in the department, she brings a seasoned eye to the financial, processing, and technology divisions she will now oversee.
According to the website announcement, McGraw's tenure at the Department of Treasury, which preceded her time with Revenue, coupled with her decade-plus experience in various financial positions within the department, positions her, despite being filled with a wealth of knowledge and skill, uniquely for the expanded role she is stepping into. "Amanda brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to this position," stated Revenue Commissioner David Gerregano. "We’re thrilled to promote her to deputy commissioner."
The responsibilities that come with McGraw’s upgraded role are significant: she is set to direct the distribution of more than $26 billion in state and local tax revenue, manage the department’s budget, and provide advice on procurement among other financial matters. "It’s an honor to be named deputy commissioner," McGraw told the Department of Revenue. "I have been so fortunate to spend over a decade at the Department of Revenue and look forward to continuing to serve Tennesseans in this expanded role."
Christine Lapps, who has been serving as the deputy commissioner since 2019, will be remaining in her role managing the customer-facing operations of the department, which includes the Audit, Taxpayer Services, Vehicle Services, and Collection Services divisions. The Department of Revenue itself stands as a pillar in Tennessee’s financial structure, having collected nearly $22.2 billion in state taxes and fees, and more than $4.7 billion in taxes and fees for local governments, in the fiscal year 2024, the department's site reports.
