Amazon has set its sights on Porter, Texas, once again by confirming the opening of its long-awaited 150,000-square-foot delivery station. The East Montgomery County Improvement District teased the update in a Facebook post, bringing the anticipated project into the community's spotlight after a three-year delay. First announced back in 2021, the delivery station's intended launch had slipped from the following year to a hitherto unspecified future date.
"Launch dates are projections and we're always evaluating our network to make sure it fits our business needs and to improve the experience for customers," Kara Hille, a spokesperson for Amazon, conveyed in a written statement obtained by the Houston Chronicle. East Montgomery County has been waiting to directly benefit from the facility, which is anticipated to not only bring more than 300 full-time jobs to the area but to also positively influence local business dynamics.
Despite the prior delays, the Amazon facility is a substantial addition to Porter's infrastructure, poised to streamline delivery operations in the Houston area. The new jobs are expected to start at $15 per hour and offer diverse benefits packages, even opening opportunities for independent contractors via Amazon Flex. "We're excited that they're ready to open that facility and have cars running in and out of it," stated Kelley Mattlage, chief communications officer for the East Montgomery County Improvement District, in a prior discussion shared with the Houston Chronicle.
Porter's commercial landscape is rapidly evolving, and Amazon's delivery station plays a significant part in this transformation. Notably, officials from the Greater East Montgomery County Chamber highlighted a milestone hit in 2022, reaching 500 members for the first time, as indicated by the chamber's president and CEO, Mark Linabury. "We branded ourselves 'a hub of opportunity' because all roads now lead to this area in East Montgomery County," Linabury told a Houston Chronicle interview.
The plans for the delivery station have been part of a larger narrative of growth within the Houston area, with Amazon announcing the opening of four new facilities back in 2021. The addition of the Porter station has been a subject of local interest since its announcement and the subsequent postponements further heightened community anticipation. Despite these setbacks, the facility is poised to finally make a tangible impact on the local job market and regional logistics capabilities. "We still plan to launch a new facility in Porter ... providing many great jobs to the area," Amazon spokesperson Daniel Martin reassured in an emailed statement mentioned in a Community Impact.
