Resident Tom Kurzeja, whose home is near the tragic scene, shared his emotional response, as reported by WBALTV, saying, "My heart just breaks for this family." Although he did not witness the collision directly, the unsettling sounds drew him closer. "I had just been outside, and I heard a terrible shriek from my building, so I came down to see what was going on."
According to Captain Lamar Howard of the Annapolis Police, to help another child out of their car by the mother, the small boy sitting on the sidewalk got away and wandered into the path of an unknown vehicle. Tragedy occurred shortly before 4 p.m.
Investigators are seeking to identify the vehicle, which they suspect may be a pickup truck or SUV. Police are uncertain if the driver knew they had hit someone while leaving the parking lot. Throughout the evening, officers were seen canvassing the neighborhood in search of surveillance footage that might illuminate details of the incident.
