Tragedy struck Anne Arundel County last night when a pedestrian was fatally struck by an unmarked police vehicle. The accident on Solomons Island Road at Route 50 was promptly responded to by troopers from the Annapolis Barrack after 7:30 p.m., as reported by Maryland State Police.
The incident involved an unmarked 2016 Ford Explorer operated by a state trooper, now under investigation by the Maryland State Police. The pedestrian, a 32-year-old woman whose name has been withheld pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene by Anne Arundel County Emergency Medical Services.
According to the initial findings, the victim entered the roadway unexpectedly and was hit by the vehicle, which was traveling north. The trooper at the wheel is reported to have provided first aid and called for further emergency support. Notably, the driver was unharmed in the incident.
Area traffic was impacted as the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration implemented road closures to aid the investigation at the scene. Maryland State Police Crash Team’s ongoing investigation of the cause of the accident will eventually be reviewed by the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office. Similarly, Maryland State Police will look into the matter administratively, following standard procedure, to understand the full context of the crash.
