In Arlington, a city-wide effort is underway to bolster public health as we step into the fall season. City Council District 3 Representative Nikkie Hunter is championing this push by hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness Health Fair on Saturday, Oct. 5. The fair, which claims to not only aid in early detection of breast cancer but also offers an array of other health services, is free and open to the public and will take place at the Bob Duncan Center, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The community event is setting out to provide crucial health screenings, including mammograms, prostate screenings, and flu vaccines. According to the City of Arlington, Hunter, who has a background in healthcare, expresses her purpose, "As a woman who also works in healthcare, it’s important to me to make the Breast Cancer Awareness Health Fair a tradition in Arlington. I want every woman to have the resources that they need to stay healthy". The statement emphasizes Hunter's commitment to health education and preventative care within her community.
Aside from the screenings for breast and prostate cancer, the health fair will also feature diabetes and vision screenings, among other wellness resources. Medical service providers, such as Texas Health Resources, will be administering flu vaccines, while Moncrief Medical will be present, to handle sign-ups for various cancer screenings. These services are particularly pertinent as the flu season looms, and early cancer detection is known to significantly improve patient outcomes.
