
An Atlanta Police Department officer is currently in the hospital following an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg, the incident occurred at the Atlanta Public Safety Annex Building. The unnamed officer was part of a routine process, submitting a recovered firearm to the evidence locker when it discharged, leading to the injury, this was confirmed by the police department, as per reports from FOX 5 Atlanta.
Earlier today, police were summoned to the Annex on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, to assist the sergeant who had been injured, according to WSB-TV, which led to traffic buildup as several patrol cars escorted the ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital, the hospital where the officer is currently receiving medical attention and is stable.
The APD has not publicly identified the officer involved in the incident, maintaining privacy at this juncture, the department's stance reflecting the sensitive nature of such incidents which are as much about the individuals as they are about the protocols that underpin safety in the handling of firearms within the force.
