The pursuit of truth in the wake of tragedy has placed Attorney David Meier at the helm of an independent investigation into the untimely death of Trooper Enrique Delgado-Garcia, who was training with the Massachusetts State Police at the time of his passing. According to Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell, Meier’s extensive background in legal dealings and special counsel work, specifically his experience from 2012-2013 as Special Counsel overseeing the Hinton State Drug Laboratory investigation, positions him as a suitable choice to lead this sensitive inquiry.
Meier’s prior role as the Chief of Homicide in Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office involved supervising a range of homicide cases, providing him with ample experience in the realm of death investigations. His task is now to illuminate the circumstances that led to Delgado-Garcia's demise, a responsibility that AG Campbell states he is well-equipped for. "Trooper Delgado-Garcia lost his life while training to protect and serve the Commonwealth, and I want to thank his family and the public for their patience as we sought to identify the most appropriate authority to investigate the facts surrounding his tragic death," Campbell expressed the need for a meticulous approach in this inquiry, as noted by Mass.gov.
As the investigation unfolds, Meier will have the autonomy to assemble his team without external influence and is backed by the Attorney General's Office to ensure the investigation’s independence, as stated on Mass.gov. The Massachusetts State Police will remain outside the investigative process to avoid any potential conflict of interest, ensuring that the findings are unbiased and based on fact.
In a statement highlighting the gravity of the situation, Attorney Meier acknowledged the weight of the task ahead. "The investigation into Trooper Delgado-Garcia's death will be undertaken professionally, thoroughly, and responsibly. The Delgado-Garcia family, their community, and the public have been waiting patiently. It is now time to get to work." These words emphasize a clear commitment to a transparent elucidation of events as Meier undertakes this crucial endeavor, as reported by Mass.gov.
