The streets of southeast Austin were marred by tragedy last Sunday when an altercation escalated to fatal violence. The Austin Police Department responded to the scene in the 2500 block of Teri Road around 5:55 p.m. following reports of a shooting, as reported by FOX 7 Austin. There, they discovered 25-year-old Steve Gonzalez with a gunshot wound in a garage. Despite efforts to save him by APD, the Austin Fire Department, and Austin-Travis County EMS, Gonzalez was pronounced dead shortly before 7 p.m.
According to the police, a dice game preceded the heated exchange that proved to be lethal. The conflict, which began inside, inevitably drew both men outside before Martin Tovar, aged 26, allegedly returned to fatally shoot Gonzalez. Tovar, who fled the scene, was later apprehended and has been charged with first-degree murder. This incident has been named as Austin's 43rd homicide of the year.
Witnesses to the event, who called 911, include a woman who identified herself as the victim's wife and another who claimed the victim was their uncle. This information was also corroborated by KVUE. Further investigation revealed that before the fatal outcome, Gonzalez and Tovar were known to each other, which adds a layer of complexity to a seemingly random act of violence.
The Austin Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident and encourages anyone with relevant information to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program or by contacting the Austin Police Department directly. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for information that leads to an arrest, offering a measure of justice to barely placate the irreversible loss of life that has transpired in the community.
