An Austin man, identified as Hunter Rouse, 31, has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to charges stemming from a robbery incident in 2023; according to KXAN, Rouse received an eight-year sentence on September 12 for one count of aggravated robbery, coupled with another concurrent eight-year term for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, Rouse having acquired 568 days' jail credit toward his sentence.
These charges connect Rouse to a threatening confrontation at Capital Plaza in east Austin, where he was arrested linked to a shooting that, fortunately, did not result in injuries, CBS Austin detailed the events of February 23, when Rouse menacingly brandished a .40 caliber handgun in the parking lot this led to multiple calls to police reporting an active shooter situation, his crime spree involved demanding car keys at gunpoint and firing shots at a driver in the vicinity, police apprehending Rouse shortly after the chaotic scene unfolded.
Travis County court documents indicate that the sentence accounts for Rouse's guilty plea to the aggravated robbery charge, which is considered a first-degree felony in the state of Texas; the aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge Rouse also faced was dismissed upon sentencing, though court records did not provide a reason for this action.
During the altercation at the Capital Plaza, witnesses provided key testimony that illustrated the peril of the moment, one witness recounted Rouse pointing a gun and demanding her car keys she complied and was able to flee, and another witness described the harrowing experience of Rouse firing several shots which struck his vehicle as he quickly drove away; detectives have made a public appeal for assistance in identifying a third victim involved in the incident, urging community members with relevant information to come forward, the ongoing investigation suggesting that the violence Rouse unleashed has yet to be fully unearthed.
