The Baltimore County Public Library (BCPL) is set to re-open seven branches on Sundays, starting this weekend, September 8. It will continue to do so through the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend, as confirmed by WMAR-2 News. These branches include Arbutus, Cockeysville, North Point, Owings Mills, Perry Hall, Pikesville, and Towson, operating between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. These locales were selected based on their high usage on pre-pandemic Sundays, other factors like available space and resources, parking facilities, and the prevalence of necessities like computers.
With the community spirit in mind, BCPL CEO Sonia Alcántara-Antoine expressed enthusiasm, stating, "We look forward to welcoming our community back on Sundays!" as these branches seek to provide not just literature and film but also crucial resources such as computer access and Wi-Fi, along with serving as safe refuges from the elements when required, the enthusiasm is evident even though the statement was not tied directly to emotion as per NottinghamMD.
This revival of Sunday service is part of a broader initiative, ‘Wild About Sundays,’ which brings a mix of activities to the libraries. These involve character appearances from "Where the Wild Things Are," succulent giveaways, and exciting interactions with exotic creatures through Eco Adventures. The rollout of these events, like the Reptile Show at North Point Branch or the ‘wild’ succulent garden creation activity in Pikesville, is slated to span from September to late October, with differing branches hosting various programs every Sunday.
The library is offering patrons who borrow items on Sundays during the campaign a chance to win one of three ‘Wild About Sundays’ prize packs. Prizes include a family trip to Great Wolf Lodge, gift cards, and themed goodies. Library employees, their families, and students using their student accounts can’t enter. Borrowing more items doesn’t increase your chances of winning. Winners will be notified by email on November 1.
Starting September 9, BCPL is celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month. New cardholders will get a bookmark that grows wildflowers. BCPL's digital library is available 24/7 with many downloadable and streaming media. You can find more details on BCPL's website.
