Bay Area travelers planning to navigate the waters between Southport and Fort Fisher might need to briefly adjust their sails. The N.C. Department of Transportation has announced a temporary suspension of ferry services on this route to allow for necessary maintenance work. According to an NCDOT press release, the Southport-Fort Fisher ferry will halt operations from tomorrow morning, Sept. 6, through Saturday, Sept. 7.
The short pause in service is to specifically allow for maintenance on the ramps and marine pilings at the Southport terminal. In an effort to minimally disrupt commuters, the ferry will still make its early scheduled departures from Southport at 5:30 a.m. and 7 a.m., and from Fort Fisher at 6:15 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. on Sept. 6. After these sailings, the route will to then suspend operations for the remainder of the day and the entirety of the following day.
Travelers dependent on this route for their weekend plans should make alternative arrangements for their transportation during this brief window. Regular ferry services will not be disrupted beyond what is scheduled, facilitating a return to normalcy for ferry users. The NCDOT assures that normal service on the Southport-Fort Fisher route will resume on Sunday, Sept. 8, alleviating any prolonged inconvenience for ferry passengers.
For those looking ahead and planning around this weekend's maintenance, the ferry's schedule outside of the affected dates will proceed as it typically does. The North Carolina Department of Transportation is committed to ensuring the safety and reliability of their ferry routes and the minor disruptions are seen as essential to maintaining these standards. Updates and any potential changes to the schedule will be made available on the NCDOT website, allowing travelers to readily access the latest information and to efficiently plan their commutes accordingly.
