Early Wednesday morning, a 21-year-old suspect found himself in handcuffs after a series of events unfolded in Bellevue's Crossroads neighborhood, where he was arrested for assaulting a police officer and driving under the influence. According to the Bellevue Police Department, it started when a resident alerted police to a man slumping over the wheel of a 2016 silver Hyundai sedan at 148th Avenue NE and Bel-Red Road, noting the vehicle was running. In the drive, Bellevue Police arrived to find the ignition removed and the driver's door lock damaged.
Upon arrival, the officers noticed various tools typically used in theft and burglary within the vehicle's center console. This prompted them to arrange their vehicles strategically around the Hyundai before awakening the suspect. Once law enforcement initiated the arrest, the situation quickly escalated as the suspect began to resist, an action that led to an officer sustaining a broken finger and both suspect and officer being treated at Overlake Medical Center. The suspect's resistance also led to concerns he could use the vehicle as a weapon.
The man now faces multiple charges, including assault of a police officer, DUI, and possession of a stolen vehicle; he also had an ignition interlock violation to his name, with other counts that included resisting arrest, possession of burglary tools, and driving while suspended. The Bellevue Police also linked the suspect to an earlier incident involving a stolen Hyundai Elantra in Redmond, contributing to the allegations against him. Recovered from the vehicle were items suspected to be stolen mail from at least 29 victims, according to evidence noted by authorities.
The Bellevue Police Department shared finalized details of the case. It confirmed the suspect's booking into the King County Jail, where he would await proceedings pertaining to the various allegations made regarding his activities in both Bellevue and Redmond.
