The Beaverton community is grieving the death of Melissa Jubane, a 32-year-old Oregon nurse with Hawaii. According to Hawaii News Now, Jubane, who worked at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland and was recently married in Hawaii, failed to show up for her nursing shift on September 4, prompting a welfare check.
Her neighbor, Bryce Johnathan Schubert, also with connections to the medical field, was arrested on second-degree murder charges. While raising questions in the usually serene community, the Beaverton Police Department determined that Schubert was involved in her disappearance, as KITV reports.
During the welfare check, police found Melissa's home empty and her absence concerning. Officials and family were unable to contact her, as her phone was off and there were no recent transactions on her bank or credit card accounts.
Having tied the knot in Hawaii less than two weeks before her disappearance, friends of Jubane are left grappling with her untimely demise. "She was so happy and just so like, I don’t know, just glowing and it’s just really heartbreaking, to kind of see it happen, especially here," shared Oscar Cardenas, a friend of Jubane, in a statement obtained by Hawaii News Now. He also expressed disbelief that such an event could unfold in what is perceived as a safe and tranquil part of town.
As a growing memorial pays homage to the life and service of Jubane, her friends remember her as "a very helpful person" who "served her community day in and day out," according to a former colleague, Samantha Oregon, told Hawaii News Now. The investigation is ongoing.
