An inmate at the Bexar County Jail has died following what authorities are describing as a medical episode likely related to substance withdrawals. As reported by KSAT, 50-year-old Paul Anthony Sarabia was in the process of being booked on Thursday, Sept. 5 when he experienced the episode, passing away the next day in a local hospital.
While deputies are pointing to substance withdrawals as the probable cause behind Sarabia's medical distress, the official cause of death will have to undoubtedly be determined by the Bexar County Medical Examiner. The death marks the third one at Bexar County Jail since August, with the Texas Commission on Jail Standards notified about the incident. An administrative investigation is underway by the BCSO Internal Affairs Unit, shedding light on the procedures and conditions that may have played a role in the tragedy.
Further details from KENS 5 confirm this recent passing is the eighth inmate death at the facility this year. The situation at Bexar County Jail has drawn scrutiny from various oversight bodies, with Precinct 2 collaborating with BCSO's internal affairs and the Public Integrity Unit to rigorously investigate these occurrences.
