
An unidentified person was killed in a collision while riding a bicycle on South Congress Avenue early Wednesday morning of last week, according to Austin Police Department reports. The incident occurred in the 5000 block of South Congress Avenue at around 12:34 a.m., marking the city's 61st fatal crash this year.
The Austin Police responded to the crash to find the pedestrian dead at the scene. This latest casualty brings Austin's traffic fatality count for 2024 up to 66 deaths. At the same time last year, the city had witnessed 63 fatal crashes resulting in the same number of fatalities. This year’s count appears to be slightly on pace with the previous year's tragic toll on human life.
The driver and passenger of the vehicle involved were unharmed, stayed at the scene, and have been cooperating with the ongoing investigation. While details surrounding the cause of the crash have not been released, officials are urging any witnesses or those with relevant information to come forward.
