In Blanco County, Texas, Danielle Ivy Dechert, aged 27, has been sentenced to a 40-year term following a guilty plea to charges of Injury to a Child – Recklessly Causing Death/Serious Bodily Injury, relating to the death of her 5-month-old child, the Texas Attorney General's Office reported. The sentencing took place on August 30, 2024, with Dechert admitting to the charges in the 33rd Judicial District Court.
According to court documents, the incident leading to the tragic demise of Rheylene Ledesma occurred as Dechert, under the influence of an illegal substance, co-slept with the infant and unwittingly caused suffocation. The aftermath was marred by further negligence, as Dechert delayed seeking any necessary medical assistance for the child for over eight hours, by when it was too late to do anything for Rheylene.
A prior criminal record exacerbated Dechert’s sentencing. Her previous convictions, dating back to 2014, for Evading in a Motor Vehicle and Endangering a Child factored into the enhancement of her punishment range. The severity of the sentence thus reflects both the current offense and her prior encounters with the law.
The enforcement and prosecution team was led by Texas Ranger Jose Rodriguez, who took charge of the investigation. The prosecutor efforts were helmed by Assistant Attorney Generals Amanda Dillon and Jamie Tillman, with Sgt. Brian Seales from the Office of the Attorney General provided, necessary assistance in securing the conviction and the lengthy sentence.
