A shooting incident in Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood on Monday night has left one man dead and another behind bars. Officials reported that officers were already on patrol near Centre Street when they heard successive gunshots, followed by an immediate activation of the ShotSpotter system, a gunfire detector. As reported by WHDH, upon arriving at the scene, the police discovered a man with gunshot wounds who was quickly treated before being taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
According to the Boston Police Department, one individual is now under arrest, facing charges related to carrying a firearm in addition to multiple outstanding warrants and firearm violations. The police operation extended to the nearby Mildred C. Hailey Apartments near the Jackson Square MBTA station, where the incident occurred. In a large-scale search of the crime scene, officers recovered multiple firearms, as noted by NBC Boston.
"At this time we're dealing with a very large and active crime scene that spreads out through most of the development," Boston police Deputy Superintendent Paul McLaughlin said. Amidst the chaos, nearby residents witnessed a swift law enforcement response. "We were up in the window and we just saw a ton of cop cars, like a SWAT team," relayed one local resident to NBC Boston reporters.
Details continue to be scarce as the investigation proceeds, but officials have suggested that there might be others involved who fled from the scene. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the event is urged to contact the Boston police. The name of the suspect arrested has not been disclosed, as per information from NBC Boston.
