In an innovative approach to local governance, Boulder is spearheading an initiative that houses citizens directly at the decision-making table. The city announced its first Community and Council Forum will take place on September 26 as part of a pilot program called the Better Public Meetings project. This forum is geared toward fostering more effective community engagement and will spotlight the city's Economic Development Plan and Program Enhancements.
Set to run from 6 - 9 p.m. in the Council Chambers, the session will begin with a staff presentation followed by a Q&A and small group discussions between city council members, staff, and members of the community. "We are thrilled to be launching this new forum in direct response to the community’s desire for more meaningful engagement earlier in our processes," Nuria Rivera-Vandermyde, the city manager said, as per the City of Boulder. The council is curious to see what insights they can glean from the pilot, and how it might inform future governance.
Civic participation has been capped at 20 spots for the event. Half of these are reserved for selected community members with relevant experience to the forum's core topic. The remainder of seats will be doled out through a sign-up and random draw process, should interest exceed availability. Despite registration being no guarantee of selection, interested parties are encouraged to sign up and have the opportunity to observe the proceedings in person or through a livestream on both Channel 8 and Boulder’s YouTube channel.
In a move promoting inclusiveness, the forum will offer Spanish interpretation services to extend accessibility. This initiative is a significant pivot from the city’s standard study sessions, and the first of three forums in the experimental series with two additional sessions set for 2025, dates yet to be announced.
