Broward County residents should be cautious of a new scam targeting pet owners. According to a public announcement by Animal Care, the official pet adoption and animal welfare agency, scammers are posing as their staff and preying upon the emotions of individuals who've lost their pets. Using technology, these scammers camouflage their true origins, manipulating their caller IDs to appear as if the calls are actually coming from Animal Care.

These scammers lure unsuspecting pet owners with claims that their missing animals have been found, sometimes adding that the pets are injured, according to Animal Care's warning. Residents are urged to stay vigilant as they navigate this ordeal. The scammers ask for payment. Animal Care Director Doug Brightwell asserts in clear terms, "While we work to reunite lost pets with their families, we never charge fees for this service via phone."

Animal Care warns  that any requests for payment over the phone are a scam. If you're contacted by someone claiming they have your pet and demanding money, the agency advises to notify the authorities immediately or to contact Animal Care directly at 954-359-1313.

Animal Care reminds the community to use vetted resources when looking for their lost pets. Pet owners should rely on the official Animal Care website, the provided phone number, or simply dial 311. While emphasising the importance of maintaining up-to-date pet registration, they reaffirm their commitment to serve without exploiting those caught in a worrying search for a lost companion.
