The City of Burien is actively embarking on a mission to appoint a new police chief, with the process set to involve a collective of panels from various facets of the community. The outgoing chief, Theodore (Ted) Boe, has fulfilled his duties for six years and will assume the role of Chief of Police in Des Moines, as per a city announcement.
Starting next week, interviews with potential candidates will be influenced by not just the City's leadership staff and councilmembers, but also by community leaders and members of the organizations that reflect Burien's diverse population. Adolfo Bailon, the Burien City Manager detailed, "Helping drive this selection process is a diverse group of stakeholders representing a wide array of identities and experiences,” according to the city's news announcement. He further emphasized the significance of the selection process as a step towards achieving the City's strategic goals in advancing racial equity.
Captain Tom Calabrese will take on the role of interim police chief during the interim, ensuring the continuity of leadership until a new chief is officially appointed. This transitional period is seen as a critical juncture for Burien's Police Department, as it aims to embrace a leader who reflects and upholds the values of its community.
The city plans to maintain transparent communication with Burien residents as the selection process unfolds. The city manager will make the final decision, after carefully considering feedback gathered from the stakeholder panels. The selection will be based on how well the candidates align with the City's strategic plan goals — especially in terms of furthering racial equity within the police department.
