This morning in Butler County, a blaze engulfed a multi-family home on Heaton Street. Neighbors and emergency responders quickly mobilized to rescue residents from the inferno. As reported by WLWT, one individual was trapped on the structure's second floor, calling for assistance until a neighbor intervened.
Local resident Justin Roark, who first noticed the fire, instinctively punched open a door and ascended the smoke-filled staircase. "The fire and the smoke were pouring down the stairs at this time into the hallway. I'd seen a hand, so I grabbed it," Roark recounted his actions in a statement obtained by WLWT. Roark's quick response preceded the arrival of the firefighters and undoubtedly played a crucial role in the safe evacuation of the residents.
The Hamilton Fire Department confirmed that all occupants, including a pet cat, were accounted for, and no serious injuries were reported. The response from civilians and professionals effectively avoided what could have been a tragic outcome. According to LOCA12, the Red Cross was also on-site to support the now-displaced residents.
Risking his own safety to save others, Roark's courage was not lost on bystanders or the rescued individuals. "It was stupid what I did, but it was human," Roark explained in an interview with WCPO. His determination was once again demonstrated when he assisted in rescuing another man trapped on the first floor by helping the police knock out a window. Roark expressed a blunt resolve despite the inherent danger: "I'm fearless, basically. And I do stupid things on a whim, but it's methodical and smart."
