Byron Center Public Schools decided to cancel all classes today due to an investigation into a possible threat, a situation stemming from social media rumors. According to WZZM13, an email was disseminated to parents by Chuck Fedewa, Board of Education Secretary for Byron Center Public Schools, explicating the district's decision to proactively close schools due to an abundance of caution.
The possible threat was initially reported to concern West Middle School or Byron Center High School. The Kent County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) is thoroughly investigating after being alerted to social media posts insinuating potential violence. KCSO's investigation aims to clearly determine the credibility of these concerns and has prompted a comprehensive check of the areas mentioned in these threats. Superintendent Kevin Macina assured parents that safety protocols are under continuous review and that they will be communicated as necessary, as per an announcement covered by WOODTV.
The origin of these rumors is connected to an incident during a football game at Byron Center against East Kentwood, where a student was found in possession of a pocketknife. Despite no intention to use the knife for harm being established, the incident fueled unfounded rumors of violent intentions. In response, the sheriff's office has stated that the perceived threat is a byproduct of social media speculation and chatter, a sentiment echoed in WOODTV's reporting.
Dominic Lowe, East Kentwood Freshman Campus Principal, informed families that they had successfully resolved the situation in collaboration with their School Resource Officer, reinforcing that at no point was there a credible threat to community safety. “At no time during this situation was there a threat to the safety of our school community," Lowe affirmed, in statements relayed by WOODTV.
As these events unfold and investigations continue, all involved parties are keen to operate with transparency and to maintain open lines of communication with parents and the wider school community.
