As the Line Fire continues its destructive path through San Bernardino County, a new round of evacuations has been ordered due to flare-ups exacerbated by the scorching temperatures. FOX LA reports that as of their latest update, the wildfire has rampaged across 43,251 acres and is sitting at an 83% containment figure. Residents in the surrounding areas have been instructed to seek safety as authorities battle to gain control over the unruly blaze.
With the mercury tipping scales to near 115 degrees in parts of the Inland Empire, the firefighters assigned to this beast of a fire are not only fighting the flames but also the relentless heat. A pivotal development in the saga, as FOX LA documented, the California National Guard has been deployed to both assist in firefighting efforts and to safeguard neighborhoods bereft of their inhabitants due to evacuation directives.
Shedding light on the inception of the Line Fire, authorities arrested 34-year-old Justin Halstenberg, whose vehicle was identified near the ignition point of Baseline Road and Alpin Street in Highland. According to reports from FOX LA, Halstenberg was nabbed thanks to license plate readers that placed his truck proximal to where the wildfires kicked off, helping investigators establish a critical timeline.
Residents in the embrace of the inferno have been given evacuation warnings, with Cal Fire placing Highland neighborhoods east of Church Street, north of Highland Avenue, and areas east of Weaver Street on high alert. The smoke from the wildfire has cast a pernicious pall over the region, prompting warnings from the South Coast Air Quality Management District about "very unhealthy" air conditions, as Hoodline reports, advising even those without respiratory issues to take caution.
In response to the escalating situation, Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency, a move that seeks to quickly harness federal resources to support the fire response. The conflagration has exacted its toll, with one structure obliterated, four more damaged, and four reported injuries, according to FOX LA. As of now, evacuation orders encompass several regions, including the community of Seven Oaks and the San Gorgonio Wilderness, with Redlands East Valley High School being designated as an evacuation shelter.
