
The Cape & Islands District Attorney's Office has announced charges against a teen driver, Jack Burns, 17, following a fatal car crash that occurred on Cape Cod in June. Burns was indicted on charges including operating a motor vehicle recklessly, resulting in a death and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, leading to serious bodily injury, Boston.com reports.
The crash claimed the life of Nolan Barr, a 17-year-old student athlete from Mashpee, and injured several other teens. According to NBC Boston, the incident occurred during the early hours of June 25 when Burns lost control of the Toyota RAV4 he was driving and collided with a tree. Police said the seven occupants inside the SUV ranged in age from 15 to 17 years old, all from Mashpee and Falmouth.
An arraignment date is yet to be scheduled for Burns in Falmouth Juvenile Court. Details concerning Burns' legal representation have not been disclosed, at the time of reporting, it's not clear if he has an attorney to speak on his behalf regarding the charges. The indictment follows the Barnstable County grand jury's examination of evidence presented by prosecutors, as conveyed by the District Attorney's Office.
Barr, who was pronounced dead following the accident, was remembered as a talented athlete and an honor student with aspirations that shone bright among his peers. His dedication to sports and, the warmth of his personality made a lasting impression on his community. Friends and family recalled him as a "kind soul" in interviews after the crash, Boston 25 News reports.
