In an era when seconds can mean the difference between life and death, Carrollton's 911 services have adeptly upgraded to include live video streaming, providing a decisive edge to emergency response personnel. The North Texas Emergency Communications Center (NTECC), which oversees the dispatch for Carrollton, Addison, Coppell, and Farmers Branch, is ensuring faster and more effective assistance during crises. With the Prepared 911 program, Carrollton is setting a new precedent for others to follow.
The core of this innovative system lies in its ability to send a link to 911 callers to start livestreaming their emergency straight to the dispatcher, aiming to quickly assess the situation. Rex Redden, the Executive Director of Public Safety for Carrollton, emphasized the program's efficacy by stating, as per the City of Carrollton, "Instead of having to wait for a responder to arrive, then request additional resources, we will know sooner and can deliver those resources faster." At the helm, NTECC ensures confidentiality and control of the feature, allowing the live feed to end at the caller's discretion, noted cityofcarrollton.com.
Additional capabilities of the Prepared 911 program include text communication with dispatchers when callers are unable to speak, an advancement made possible by a 2019 upgrade to the 911 system. This integration significantly bolsters NTECC's ability to swiftly and precisely locate individuals in distress by using GPS data from cellphones, a feature that blurs the lines between immediate and faster-than-ever response times.
"We are very happy to provide this service to our residents; it is going to be a game changer," remarked Terry Goswick, Executive Director of NTECC, recognizing the profound impact of such technology. The Prepared 911 service notably extends beyond reducing emergency response times. It also aids in locating callers reaching out on non-emergency lines with heightened precision. "This service will also allow NTECC to better locate a caller that is calling on a non-emergency number, such as *247," added Goswick, reinforcing the comprehensive nature of their services, according to the City of Carrollton.
