During what is often dubbed the '100 Deadliest Days of Summer', Carver County Sheriff's deputies have had their hands full. Extra patrols canvassed the roads from May 1st through September 2nd, an enforcement surge that led to the issuance of 548 citations for speeding violators. According to the Carver County Sheriff's Office, two individuals were caught blazing at speeds topping 100 mph.
An incident on August 20th, reported by Deputy Deslauriers, involved a driver doing 103 on Hwy 212 in Chanhassen, a speed they claimed to be unaware of. Caught just before the stroke of midnight, this motorist became one of two to exceed triple digits on the odometer during the crackdown. There was a case, reported by the deputies, that involved a driver on July 21st, Deputy Voigt, who was patrolling, apprehended someone rocketing down Co Rd 10 in Laketown Township at a hair-raising 125 mph. This particular speed demon not only flouted the laws of road safety but did so on a revoked license.
As the summer enforcement wave drew to a close, the Sheriff's Office took a moment to acknowledge those adhering to the laws intended to keep the public safe. “Thank you to everyone who is following our traffic laws and working to keep our roadways safe,” stated the Sheriff's Office Facebook page. The sentiment reflects an appreciation for community collaboration in pursuit of safety.
Nevertheless, amidst declarations of thanks, the statistics cast a long shadow over the fleeting joy of the enforcement’s success. The captured recklessness, exemplified by those snatched from the brink at breakneck speeds, reminds us that the specter of road tragedy is an ever-present threat. When confronted by Deputy Voigt, the record-setting, license-lacking motorist offered no excuses, merely capitulating with a resigned "You got me." Such encounters, both disheartening and hazardous, punctuate the narrative of summer’s end as officials push on in their ongoing battle against the perils of irresponsible driving.
