A tragic incident occurred late Friday night in Catawba County when a man was killed after his vehicle was struck during a traffic mishap. According to the QC News, 24-year-old Mauricio Diaz Gomez was driving a 2013 Hyundai Sonata when he ran a red light at the intersection of Highland Avenue NE and Fairgrove Church Road. A 2015 Dodge Ram traveling east on Highland Avenue NE hit Gomez's vehicle, leading to his immediate death at the scene.
Following the accident, a woman, a child from the Hyundai, as well as a 44-year-old man and a juvenile from the Dodge were transported to a local medical center with injuries described as non-life-threatening, as noted by WBTV. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported to the crash shortly before 11:30 p.m., closing the road for approximately two hours during the investigation. No charges will be filed, as impairment does not appear to have been a factor in the crash.
Both vehicles had multiple passengers at the time of the collision. WSOCTV reports that the passengers in the Hyundai, as well as those in the Dodge Ram, suffered injuries detailed as non-life-threatening by authorities, and they are currently receiving necessary medical attention at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
