Early yesterday morning, a vehicle initially reported as stolen led Ceres Police on a chase through city streets. According to the Ceres Police Department's Facebook page, officers spotted the gray 2017 Kia Sportage and attempted to pull it over near the intersection of Whitmore Avenue and Mitchell Road. The driver of the stolen car failed to comply, setting off the pursuit.
The chase saw a hazard add to the streets when occupants in the fleeing vehicle discarded a loaded sawed-off shotgun from the window. One officer paused in the chase to retrieve the weapon in a quick move to prevent potential harm to the public. The department reported that the pursuit came to a halt thanks to Officer Souza's execution of a PIT maneuver, which disabled the Kia and led to the capture and arrest of all individuals inside the vehicle.
Further investigation revealed a gang affiliation among the car's occupants, with at least one person identified as a documented gang member in Stanislaus County. The arrested individuals were subsequently booked into jail. It is the kind of incident that brings to light the often unseen, decision-making and actions undertaken by police forces that help curb the threat of criminal activity in communities.
