The Enoch Pratt Free Library has moved to appoint Chad Helton, an individual seasoned in the management of public and academic libraries, as their new President & CEO. In a journey reflecting personal tenacity and community investment, Helton transitions from erstwhile experiences—including strategies forged as a library consultant—to now steer one of the nation's first free public library systems in Baltimore.

Coming in to fill the vacancy left by Heidi Daniels in February, Helton's selection follows a nationwide search, with Darcell Graham stewarding the interim presidency during the interim period. Christine Espenshade, Chair of the Pratt Library’s Board of Directors, expressed strong belief in the new appointee, stating that “His deep industry experience and creative approach to addressing infrastructure needs will be invaluable as we work toward a bold future for the Pratt Library," gleaned from a press statement, reported by Baltimore Fishbowl. Espenshade also extended gratitude to Graham for her substantial contributions as interim CEO.

Amassing over 15 years in various library roles, Helton brings to the table a hefty resume that includes directorship at Hennepin County Library in Minnesota, oversight of an expansive network of branches, and hefty budgets during his tenure at the Los Angeles Public Library, along with key roles in Contra Costa County Library and City of Palo Alto Library. His academic tentacles extend through Stanford University, the University of California-Davis, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Helton, whose narrative arcs from the depths of homelessness to the helm of library leadership, hails this appointment as a deep honor. He acknowledges the gravity of leading a pivotal institution in the realms of public service and access to knowledge. "I do not take this responsibility lightly," he stated, as per FOX Baltimore. Helton outlined plans to modernize the Pratt Library's services, ensuring that Baltimore's residents have unfettered access to information and opportunities deemed essential for success.

The new vision for Enoch Pratt Free Library includes enhancing both digital and physical infrastructure and expanding outreach to all of Baltimore. Helton highlighted initiatives like Peer Navigators, partnerships with Maryland Legal Aid, and the Pratt Free Market, which helps those facing food insecurity, showing the library's role in community support.
