Chandler Police have released body camera footage from an officer-involved shooting that took place back in May, shedding light on the incident that ended with 45-year-old Ruben Lopez's death. In the video, Lopez is seen brandishing two knives, refusing to surrender them even after officers spent approximately 30 minutes in negotiations, according to FOX 10 Phoenix. The clash escalated when Lopez reportedly asked police to, "use bullets," and then charged at the officers, prompting them to open fire.
The situation originated from a domestic disturbance call near Chandler Boulevard and Loop 101, as the homeowner alerted police about a relative acting erratically. After officers entered the backyard, the confrontation began with tasers, and pepper balls being deployed to no avail, 12 News reported. No officers were injured during the altercation, however, Lopez succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Further details have arisen surrounding the officers involved in the shooting of Lopez. All three have been placed on administrative leave, in line with department protocol after such critical events. The names of the officers have not been disclosed at the time of this writing.
