Charlotte Douglas International Airport is set to welcome passengers through its expanded Concourse A starting next Tuesday. The $241 million project adds 10 new gates, seven of which are designated for Delta Air Lines, while Frontier Airlines will occupy two and the last serving as a common-use gate. Haley Gentry, the airport's CEO, sees the expansion as a means to both enhance capacity and improve passenger experience, promising "more space, more concessions, more amenities," as reported by WBTV.

Claudia Wiktorin, a Charlotte resident and frequent traveler, told WBTV that she looks forward to the extra space provided by the expansion, noting the current difficulty of navigating through crowds at her gate. The expanded area will also feature a Wright Brothers exhibit. Another local, Olivia Ireland, expressed to WBTV her hopes that the expansion could introduce new travel destinations for Charlotte residents.

The concourse, previously a car rental area demolished in 2016, is part of the airport's "Destination CLT" initiative aimed at improving services and operations. According to The Charlotte Observer, the project began in May 2022 and is the second phase of developments following a $200 million enhancement in 2018. With the new addition, the airport now operates a total of 124 gates.

The expansion, designed with the modern traveler in mind, includes features such as auto-tinting window glass to regulate temperature and light, seating and tables with wireless charging, an embedded DC-9-82 aircraft tail in the flooring, and water-saving fixtures in restrooms, including a Mother’s Room. Gentry described the project to WSOCTV as "a significant investment in our infrastructure." The new space also introduces food and beverage options like Dunkin’, Crown Diner, Market Place, and Great Wagon Road Distilling Co., along with artistic elements such as the "First in Flight" story on the way to the gates, which includes a light wall and sound installation activated by passengers' movement.
