Charlotte residents and visitors have a new parking timetable to consider when venturing into Uptown and South End neighborhoods. WSOCTV reports that as of today, those parking on the street will need to feed the meter till 10 p.m., an extension from the previous cutoff of 6 p.m. Signs reflecting this change began installation on August 1.

The objective, conveyed by the Charlotte Department of Transportation, is to "improve parking turnover during peak hours, manage long-term parking needs, and enhance public safety by ensuring compliance with parking regulations," a strategy that has been met with understanding, if not enthusiasm. "I guess there’s a limited number of spots, and they’re going to charge for them, I wish they wouldn’t," South End resident Drew Nations told WSOCTV.

These changes are part of a Strategic Parking Plan introduced in 2022. WCNC notes that street parking, which used to be free in the evenings, now extends the paid requirement to 10 p.m., and this is set against a parking rate of $1.50 per hour with a two-hour time limit on public street parking.

This extended parking regulation applies Monday through Saturday, with Sundays being the exception to the rule. All areas are to have updated parking signage by the beginning of September, ensuring drivers are adequately informed of the new rules — a process that began in early August according to WBTV. The city also expects this measure to increase turnover during peak parking hours, when securing a spot can be particularly difficult.

For those familiar with Charlotte's busier districts such as NoDa and Plaza Midwood, the extended parking meter hours will remain as previously set, without the nighttime extension affecting Uptown and South End.
